Tell us a little more about yourself and what you do.
“My name is Gang Badoy Capati. After ten years of starting Rock Ed Philippines, I realized I was fighting the war in a different place. Rock Ed is a youth movement that handles and promotes questions on democracy.
Iʼm a mental health clinician. I work in tandem with a psychiatrist to take care of patients who are going through a dark season.
I used to worry a lot about politics and economics. But then I realized that no matter how brilliant the plan is, if your leaders are not mentally stable or they come with so much trauma, then it doesnʼt matter. I think that the nation will only progress if both the leaders and citizens are mentally and emotionally regulating.
I know that I wonʼt see the results quickly in this generation, but Iʼm looking at raising a younger crowd who are more aware of mental health. They know how not to burn out. They know how to handle their extreme grief. They know how to feel overjoyed and despair at the same time that they can come back in the middle. If they can do all these, I think weʼll have a better world.”
Aside from work, what else made you busy? Any new or old hobbies pursued during the pandemic?
“I think itʼs very healthy to be a fan of something. Geek out about something. When you are doing so, you are thoroughly learning about it. Other than your learning, it develops humility, a rigor for research, a discipline for finding out about the truth, and generosity in admiring others.
For example, youʼll know that Paul Weller was with The Jam before he was Style Council. If you know these fun facts, you might eventually want to know YOUR origin story. What were you like as a kid. What you wanted to be back then. What you are now.”
Can you remember your first Fred Perry Shirt?
“My siblings and I wear the brand. Our family photos are proof. That was THE shirt around late 60s or early 70s. Thereʼs a lot of history there.”
How do you style your Fred Perry Shirt?
“Iʼm a repeat outfitter. Itʼs always been Fred Perry for me. Itʼs my uniform. I have so much from San Francisco.
In terms of styling, I barely button up in Manila because of the weather. Although, when we travel, I do style it buttoned up.”
