Through his signature harnesses or quotation mark motifs, Virgil Abloh made us rethink restraint. Not to submit to what’s been established but to confront and free ourselves from absolutes.
References to construction sites (i.e: barricade tape) in his designs questioned the systems built by society; what structures to tear down and what barriers to look past. Off-White, the label Abloh founded, is itself a directive to celebrate a unifying shade of difference.
Where excavating norms and rebuilding fashion’s foundations are concerned, Abloh has Ib Kamara to tip his hard hat to.
Along with becoming Abloh’s successor at Off-White, Kamara is also the editor of Dazed. Through the publication, he’s paved the way for fresh perspectives, especially from those thriving on the outskirts of culture. His work at Dazed proved that style, like a psychotropic substance, has the ability to alter one’s mind for the better.
In “CELEBRATION,” his first collection for Off-White, Kamara shows how sky’s the limit in dreaming up a better future. Heavenly hues—most notably, blue—shone through the SS23 collection, beginning with blue-fleshed models freewheeling through clouds in the show’s promotional post.
