Finishing Strong: Fred Perry's Philippine Ambassadors to Cap Off 2022

Individuality faces a tough battle these days. Beyond the pressures of conforming to society, now exists the burden of standing out amid the chaos of social media and standing strong after a global pandemic.
Where such anxieties threaten self-expression, however, true creativity only grows wilder. As Fred Perry’s laurel wreath signifies triumph, the brand’s fresh set of ambassadors rise victorious.

Like the brand's namesake, these individuals have dominated whatever court they play on. In visual art or music, they’ve marched past the noise of sameness, beyond what’s convenient or formulaic. Moreover, they’ve found creative momentum in a world still struggling to get back on its feet.

From those bringing fresh tastes to the Philippine table to beat-making renegades, meet the ambassadors who wear their laurel wreath as a mark of distinction—not to mention, pride.

Tell us a little more about yourself.

"You might recognize me from my works involving food, writing, styling, to producing cook books and even TV hosting."
What is good food to you in one sentence?

"Good food to me is something that can appease my curiosities and heighten my senses."
In every dish you critique, what’s the one thing you look for?

"Always balance and flavors."
How does food translate into art?

"Food can be a statement. It can be political, cultural or social and it can also play to your senses without hardly any effort."
Describe your style in 3 words

"Easy. Comfortable. Relatable."
Does that reflect the food you gravitate toward?

"I’m 24. I'm a visual artist and I also work in fashion."
To those unfamiliar, can you describe your art and what influences it?

"My work tackles the concept of time, culture, and philosophy and how those elements are interlinked with each other. I describe my art style as the application of patches of color that make up a bigger photo. It’s very similar to how I see life, which is an amalgamation of incremental moments and experiences that make up time."
What place does pop art have in today’s art scene?

"To me, pop art reflects the present and chronicles the contemporary. So in a sense, pop art pieces are like time capsules—what seems mundane today could totally be different in a few years to come."
Have you explored new interests lately?

"I picked up my camera earlier this year and it's been with me ever since. I don’t know if it's because of the pandemic but I just want to capture and cherish moments more. Either way, it's been fun seeing the world through a different lens."
Usually, what compels you to paint?

"For me, it's like an itch that starts in my head. I’m just a messenger of the idea tasked with actually making it into something tactile."
Describe your style in 3 words.

I would describe my style as neutral, utilitarian but can be spontaneous.
What does a Fred Perry shirt mean to you?

It’s a symbol and seal of cool. As a kid, I would see the people I looked up to donned in laurel wreaths.

"I’m a music producer and an artist—I’ve been doing this for eight years."
Is there a subculture that’s influenced your music the most?

"Back in 2013, the Buwan Buwan Collective started—their shows were my introduction to beat making and making music out of samples. That whole thing that was happening was very small and just a bunch of people knew about it, and I was lucky enough to attend."
What’s the song people won’t expect you to like?

"I was listening to Justin Bieber’s “Bigger” and it was good. It was Frank Ocean who wrote it before he was Frank Ocean, back in 2008."
What’s your favorite independent gig venue as of the moment?

"Probably Karrivin in Makati, where I launched my latest album, Equinox. It was an abandoned office space and we just converted it. It's super low-key."
If you could have complete creative control over a project, what kind of story would you tell?

"Share something really personal. I think every time I start a project, it's very intentional so I’d want to start with a story or a word and build everything from there."
Describe your style in 3 words.

"Simple. Time consuming. Heart."
What does a Fred Perry shirt mean to you?

"It means a lot of things, mainly culture and going against the grain. It's a big factor that Fred Perry was a big sports brand before and it's bigger now."

What track defines the teenage you?

"I think “Don’t Blame the Wild One.” It is most reminiscent of my teenage years. Growing up mixed race, it was hard for me to build authentic friendships. I always saw myself trying to kind of adjust with the norm and what I needed to mold into the school system in Japan. That really inspired me to write the song."
What song wouldn’t people expect you to like?

"“Best of Both Worlds” by Hannah Montana. That’s like my favorite song. It’s genius and whoever wrote that song needs an award."
What’s the best song to bring people together?

"Any song by Oasis or any song from Earth, Wind, and Fire."

What does the Fred Perry shirt mean to you?

"Growing up, I remember loving the polo. I had my own Fred Perry shirt so it really reminds me of childhood. It's nice to come back and wear my size and my favorite color."

Would you say your work defies the barriers set by social constructs?

"The people around me or the people who see my work are the best people to ask whether my art means something to them. I hope it does. I don’t want to say that it defies barriers but I don’t want it also to be constrained to a certain box."
What track defines the teenage you?

"There are a lot of tracks—like My Chemical Romance’s “Welcome to the Black Parade,” songs by Britney, The Backstreet Boys, Westlife, all of the boy bands. There’s not just one track. But if I had to choose one, it would be “Welcome to the Black Parade” because that’s iconic."
Describe your style in 3 words.

"My style would have to be colorful, quirky, and I just feel like a toddler sometimes. So I like clothes that look like they’re for kids."
What does the Fred Perry shirt mean to you?

"Something timeless. It’s also a classic piece that you can style according to who you are and dress up according to how you feel. So it’s also like a staple classic piece you can just wear to any occasion."

I like the Fred Perry shirt—it’s simple. It looks neat on me. It looks like I got money.
